Deputies Use Taser to Save Man’s Life 8-22-2005

San Juan County Sheriff’s Office www.sjcso.com Date: August 22, 2005 Charged: Donald McKinney; DOB: 07/05/62 ; of Crouch Mesa Charges: Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Arson, and Resisting, Evading, and Obstructing a Peace Officer. Summary On August 20, 2005 at about 2:00 pm, deputies were dispatched to an address on County Road 3086 in reference to a man trying to kill himself. When deputies arrived they spoke with witnesses outside of the residence who said that Donald McKinney had taken a large quantity of a prescription drug. Mr. McKinney was reported to still be inside of the residence. Deputies attempted to make contact with McKinney at the front door to no avail. The deputies walked to an open window of the master bedroom and saw McKinney inside of the residence. McKinney was in the bedroom and he had a butcher knife held to his abdomen. Deputies tried to talk to McKinney and McKinney told the deputies that he had just started the house on fire. McKinney then told the deputies to shoot him. McKinney stated that he was either going to die in the fire or with the knife. Deputies began to smell smoke coming from the residence and realized that Mr. McKinney needed to be removed. Deputies went to the front door of the residence and kicked the door open. As the first deputy went to enter the home he was immediately confronted by McKinney. McKinney began to charge towards the deputy with the butcher knife held in a manner to attack the deputy. Deputy James Frost
