Stingrays are neither threatened nor endangered species. They derive their name from their slender, whip-like tails equipped with venomous spines. Stingrays are neither threatened nor endangered species. They’ve been hunted for centuries for their meat and also today stingrays are marketed for food in various countries around the world, principally in Europe and Asia. Behavior of stingrays They live in the bottom parts of shallow tropical waters. Looking carefully, you are likely to find them lying on a seabed, buried or partially covered with sand. They can move very rapidly when threatened or in pursuit of a passing fish. They also eat mollusks and crustaceans, crushing then with their flat, strong teeth. Most of stingrays are not especially afraid of humans. When approached, they swim gently to another place naturally avoiding too close contact. In many places around the world they became tourist attraction, where people can swim together or even feed them. General characteristics of stingrays Stingrays can be found in the major oceans; Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Most stingrays are marine, living in salt water but they can be found in freshwater and where salt and fresh water mix (brackish water). The shape as can be seen in the pictures, the side of the head has a continuous shape with the outer side margin of the pectoral fin, the fins that look like wings. Entry from: Puerto Maldonado, Peru Entry Title: “Head out to Amazon” Entry: “Flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, had to stop in Cusco. Cusco airport has only 1 runway. The city is situated in a valley surrounded by steep mountains. The plane flew in a U-shaped pattern around a large hill to land on the single strip airport. This is definitely an aviation hazard zone. Do not land here at night or during bad weather, ‘less you took out some life insurance. Puerto Maldonado is an outpost town nestled in middle of the jungle. Aside from the main street, most of the roads are unpaved. The sole purpose of its existence is to extract the natural riches of the river and jungle, from timber, gold, to agriculture. The road from the airport into town was bustling with activity. I was outraged by the quick buck attitude at the expense of the environment. However, as the guide explained, most of the workers are immigrants from impoverished parts of Peru. They come to seek better opportunity and the forest represents jobs opportunity and livelihood. The environment is the least of concern when you can’t feed your family. Our bus zipped through the well laid out grid roads and arrived at the tour office. There we were told to repack for 3 days/2 nights worth of supplies. According to the GAP guide, we were supposed …

Entry from: Cusco, Peru Entry Title: “Amazon and Machu Picchu” Entry: “From Puno, we reached Cusco by bus, where the craziest week of the trip was to happen, it involved plenty of early starts and only one day of relaxation. The first morning we were in Cusco 2 members of the group and I caught a flight to Puerto Maldonado, a city in the middle of the Amazon, the temperature was ridiculously hot and sunny, 28ºC and it was yet to reach 9am! After a 2 hour boat ride down the river we reached our lodge, which was run by a very nice French lady who made everyone feel at home, our guide was also very friendly and helped us make the most of our time in the rainforest. Whilst staying at the “Caymon Lodge” we did many hikes and saw a lot of wildlife, again like in the Pantonal, we managed to do a bit of Piranha fishing, and again I went in the water with them, this time was slightly more scary because before jumping in I could hear the Piranhas nibbling at the boat I was jumping in from! The nights were also comfortable, mosquito nets, bug spray and Malarone tablets helped me stay bite free and we were catered for by students from Lima University studying hospitality so everything went well. Our last night we went on a river tour and out of nowhere our guide jumped out of the boat onto a baby Caymon and we …
