Bonnaroo, Saturday Night: Sigur Ros

I was kind of hoping they’d bring out the Head Pagan of Iceland (it’s an honorary guv-appointed position) with whom they did an amazing tune which was filmed for the documentary, “Screaming Masterpiece”…Instead of the Head Pagan, they brought out a marching brass band, and well, it felt like I was at Bonnaroo, and I was glad to be there. These cats played through gremlins buzzing in their sound bins, all the while decked out for an Icelandic Christmas party on a Tennessee summer night — it all kind of felt like a music box come to life. Brass will take center stage — and blow your mind as equally as Sigur Ros — in upcoming perfs from Dirty Dozen Brass Band as well as more than a few other sets from Bonnaroo 2008, which was different and the same in some funny ways. Always good to see the field where I camp, and old friends. Here’s to gifted sleeping bags and cheap tent upgrades found on CL. As Robert Plant said (look for him in a minute) “Well, how the time’s come and gone”…In 1989 I brought over the first wave of post-Sugarcubes bands from Iceland — Bless, Reptile & HAM, on the Bad Taste label, you can still find their music online and it’s worth checking out. This is for anybody who didn’t have the money for tickets, or the volunteer deposit, or couldn’t get their lame friends to go with them or just couldn’t make it, but wanted to be here. See you next year.
