Wangari Maathai, the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Kenyan environmentalist, and founder of the Green Belt Movement (www.greenbeltmovement.org), talks about the mottainai campaign in Kenya and elsewhere. “Mottainai” is a Japanese term that means, in effect, “reduce, reuse, recycle.” Prof. Maathai first came across it during a visit to Japan in 2005. The campaign has centered in Kenya on the reduction and reuse of thin plastic bags. Recorded outside in April 2009 at Calistoga Ranch, Napa, California.

Seattle Green Bag Campaign

  • Posted on July 28, 2011 at 9:22 am

Visit www.greenbagcampaign.com for more information. On August 18th, 2009 Seattle residents will vote on a fee to reduce pollution caused by disposable shopping bags. The nearly one trillion plastic and paper bags produced every year are strangling our oceans and trashing the environment. Three hundred million bags are used annually in Seattle alone. But Big Oil and the chemical lobby are heavily invested in this toxic product and have launched an all out attack on our effort to clean up our city. We want to give consumers a choice instead of forcing them to use a harmful product just to protect corporate profits. Help us fight back by donating today!
