Entry from: Rivas, Nicaragua Entry Title: “Rainy Rivas” Entry: “August 31st, 2008 The next morning, we departed for the Nicaraguan border. It was a short drive, then we unloaded our buses and walked across the boarder while locals pushed our luggage in wheel barrow-like carts. On the other side, we sat for a few hours while Curtis took our passports and did some paperwork. Meanwhile we exchanged our colones and dollars into cordobas and finally boarded our big school bus that would be our transportation for the rest of the trip. We then discovered the reason for the hold up at the border was because one of our UW students had to remain in Costa Rica, as she is from Ethiopia and did not have the visa that is required for citizens of some countries other than the US. Luckily immigration owed a favor to a random guy riding our bus so he called them and got the girl’s visa processed within a matter of hours even though it was Sunday. We then travelled to our hotel in Rivas, Nicaragua which we had received hints about being “rugged.” As it turned out it was still hostel style but better than Hotel Bella Vista by a long shot! We quickly changed clothes and headed for the beach on Lake Nicaragua, the 7th largest lake in the world. It was as warm as bath water but still refreshing despite the fact that you had
