Jon Magnuson: Seeds of Hope CLOUDS OF DESPAIR, SEEDS OF HOPE There is plenty of disturbing news about the environment. It makes some among us angry. A far more common response is to slip into states of passivity, cynicism, and despair. Here is the good news. Healthy religious communities, when they’re at their best, counter such tendencies by brokering solidarity, compassion, but most importantly hope. Weekly prayers and liturgies are quietly filled with such efforts. As a Buddhist told me, we are, consciously or unconsciously in various religious practices, all: pointing to the moon. One peculiar teaching from the oldest spiritual traditions of the world is that hope, like most truth, is, more often than not, hidden. This insight is echoed in the Jewish understanding of Israel, a weak, nomadic tribe of Middle Easterners being selected as: A Chosen People. It appears in the story of the Buddha finding enlightenment under a tree, in the record of Jesus being born in manger because there was no room in the inn. Not long ago, in a small, simple shed next to a green house in a northern Michigan I stumbled upon such a sign of hope for the future. The first track is by allessandra Cora who was a very popular you tuber with her own channel on YT Alessandra died in the collapse of her home in tragic earthquake which struck L’Aquila (Central italy) in 2009. Also thanks to Christina Peoples for allowing me to use her song on the video, the second song, you can find Christina at this you tube address www.youtube.com Villajoiosa comes together as a municipality on a special day organized globally by the United Nations each 14th of November, we chose to give something back our free time. We held our day under the banner “A Limpiar el Mundo,”or “Let’s clean up the World” ,approximately One Hundred wonderful people came to work together as volunteers to clean up the pine forest, I have to admit it was jolly good fun,and they have left it spotless, I met some wonderful people of like mind, who gave up their Sunday to come and clean this beautiful little corner,of the most beautiful planet in all the universes,(To the best of our limited knowledge at least) an area that had been totally abandoned,had been abused by senseless people who just discarded everything in the same way as they approach life a throw away society mind set. Those who where present can testify too that fact, as we found all manner of garbage and rubble thrown all over these few green acres, and more than it’s share of plastic bags too, of course.I walked along the area today Monday and the difference is unbelievable, It’s amazing what good will can do …
