Homeless veterans come in from cold

  • Posted on September 2, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Hundreds of veterans took part in an outreach program to help homeless and disadvantaged veterans get the social services they are entitled to. The annual northern New Jersey Stand Down for homeless veterans — one of two such events in New Jersey and 157 in the country — was started by Vietnam veterans in 1988 and references the order soldiers receive when they cease combat operations to observe a period of rest and recovery. Veterans groups searched homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and even sent teams looking under bridges and in parks to find homeless veterans and offer help. Veterans received a medical checkup, a haircut and shave, a photo identification card and information about housing, legal services and welfare. Veterans were given a hot meal and were issued military surplus supplies, including green camouflage rain gear, tan and black combat boots and sleeping bags. (Video by Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger)

Hitching post for guests who come shopping on horseback.

LUBBOCK, Texas — When local horseman Carl Tepper told United Supermarkets CEO Robert Taylor that he needed a hitching post at the company’s Market Street location at 98th Street and Quaker Avenue here, Taylor’s response — not surprisingly — was, “You need what?” Tepper said he was only half-joking when he made the comment to Taylor at a special event several weeks ago. But when Taylor called him a couple weeks later to say, “Hey, we’re working on that hitching post for you,” Tepper was not surprised. “Given United’s dedication to customer service, it didn’t surprise me at all,” Tepper said. So today, when Tepper and friends come to Market Street for an early-morning cup of Peet’s coffee, they’ll not need to look for a place to park. Instead, an Old West-style hitching post now awaits their horses on the east edge of the store parking lot. And, just to make sure guests don’t get confused, a nearby sign reads, “Horse Parking Only.” A commercial real estate professional, Tepper has been making the half-mile ride to Market Street on “Seaford” regularly for quite some time now. He’s since been joined by John Barber, who rides “Cowboy” as a member of the Lubbock Police Department’s Mounted Patrol. Others in the group include Ashley Reeves, a veterinarian technician student, and Carol Ford, a loss prevention professional with a local insurance company. Until now, the group members were forced to hitch their rides to a nearby tree, but that proved untenable. “The horses would
