Italy’s Immigrant Living Conditions

  • Posted on August 9, 2011 at 7:04 am

It’s not much to look at, but these make-shift cardboard boxes are people’s homes. Built inside an abandoned industrial complex, hundreds of migrant workers sleeping here get some respite from the wind and rain. The international medical aid agency Medicine Sans Frontieres say the migrants- who are being employed in Southern Italy, are being exploited by living in very poor conditions and being paid meager wages. “Ever since I was a child I wanted to come to Italy, I was curious but I never had the courage to do it. But when war broke out in my country I came, that’s why I decided to come here.” The cardboard city is only one of many spontaneous settlements where migrants live in tough conditions. “I never thought it would be so bad here.” In Italy, MSF supports various health centers dedicated to the workers, handing out sleeping bags and hygiene kits. Thousands of Africans, many without papers, seek jobs as fruit-pickers, in Calabria, the region on the southern toe of Italy.
