Modern Man, Industry and the Process of Disconnect is a video installation comprised of 30 images that are synched to a sound track constructed of a variety of movie clips and sound effects used to narrate the pseudo-cinema narrative sequence. The video is set up to continuously play, projected upon a wall or screen, so that viewers are able to invest in the level of observational commitment of their choosing. In front of the wall or screen will be 3-4 bean bag chairs along with bench seating directly behind the bean bags. Modern Man, Industry and the Process of Disconnect is using the images in conjunction with sound to communicate the message that through consumerism the consumer has been conditioned to believe that products satisfy primary needs. That with this learned perception, consumers have come to treat all things around them, even human beings, as an object that should supply their needs. That this outcome is the result of the physical removal from the process of creation that once was an every day part of life prior to the industrial revolution. In the video installation this separation is signified by “The Wall” which is the symbol for industry as well as the internal separation that simultaneously develops inside of the consumer. The narration moves in a climatic approach, with a somewhat educational tone, as it brings these problems into the consciousness of the viewer, while proposing alternative solutions that remove the wall.
