Entry from: Lake Debo, Mali Entry Title: “Niger River Cruise Part I, Mali, November 9,2007″ Entry: “The Niger River is Africa’s second longest after the Nile, flowing about 2500 miles from its headwaters not far from the Atlantic in the Guinean highlands in a broad arc towards the northeast, southeast, and then southwards through Mali, Niger, and Nigeria. To travel by river the 200 or so miles from Mopti to Timbuktu is considered one of Africa’s great travel experiences. Our boat was one of the type known as a pinasse, the rather narrow medium-sized river going boats larger than the small fishermens’ pirogues but smaller than the river ferries. Even with motor power the journey would take the better part of three days. Once I got on I felt like I had gone out of the frying pan and into the fire since the fully loaded pinasse was even more crowded and cramped than our truck Daphne. Our Malian guide Grandpere arranged for the boat, crew, and cook, while in Mopti we loaded onto the pinasse almost everything we’d need for the next three days – food, beer, soft drinks, tents, beer, sleeping bags, small bags, more beer, a major logistics project. I couldn’t help but feel a little worried about the craft since it seemed to be one young crew member’s fulltime job to bale water out of the bottom of the …

Entry from: Cusco, Peru Entry Title: “Se” Entry: “An hour flight over the mountains took us to Cusco, the “navel” of the ancient Inca capital. The city sits at about 10000 ft and is the jumping off point for the Inca Trail. It was overcast when we arrived, so we sat outselves at the cafe Ayllu for some maté (apple pie) and people watching in the main Plaza de Armas. We moved into our hostal, el Albergue Municipal, after a steep climb upwards from the plaza– but totally worth it for the views. We spent the first few days getting situated and drinking mass amounts of water in an attempt to speed the acclimitization process. This prompted many trips to the bathroom. Recent regulations on the Inca trail require certified guides to accompany any trekkers. We settled on Peru Treks and Adventures, which turned out to be a good choice. We met up with Nate and the three of us prepared ourselves for the trip- (according to our guides, my gortex jacket will definitly NOT do. better to buy a plastic poncho- which turned out to be a lovely shade of purple. Laura might win though, with her purchase of some red plastic pants to compliment her red poncho). First of all, the night before Peru Treks dropped off our rented sleeping bags which turned out to be HUGE and filled up the majority of our daypacks, which …

Entry from: Paro, Bhutan Entry Title: “Trek in the Himalayas” Entry: “Our flight to Bhutan had a stop in Kathmandu, Nepal, and Sarah got her first sight of the Himalayas. We flew into Paro, the only city with an airport in Bhutan. It had taken five flights through five countries over five days to reach Paro from Windhoek, Namibia and there was a big temperature change – it was in the 40′s in Bhutan as opposed to the 100′s in Namibia. We had two days in Paro before our trek. We visited the Paro dzong (A dzong is a large Bhutanese building that serves many purposes. It was a combination of a fortress, administration center and a monastery/religious ritual site) and Tiger’s Nest, an incredible monastery. In our 17 days in Bhutan, we would see many dzongs, monasteries and other religious sites, but the Tiger’s Nest had the best location. Tiger’s nest is about 2000 feet above the valley floor and perched on a sheer cliff. We started our trek at around 8500 feet of elevation, and it would take three days of trekking to reach the Jhomolhari base camp at 13000 feet. Luckily for Sarah, the trails that we were on had bridges and there weren’t any glacial stream crossings. The trails were originally yak herder trails, and we shared them with many yaks and horses. Entry from: Airlie Beach, Australia Entry Title: “Most Beautiful Man In the World” Entry: “Hi Everybody, Last you heard we were frolicking with all sorts of endemic Australian wildlife and having a great time on the Victorian coast. Since then we’ve done quite a bit of moving around Australia. First, we spent an absolutely wonderful week in Sydney with two of the most wonderful and welcoming (to two tired travelers) people – Matthew and Jayne, Jordan’s friends from a previous trip. Originally, we had planned to only stay in Sydney for five days, but extended to make sure we could attend the many fun activities Matthew and Jayne had planned for our enjoyment. Aside from a Sydney harbour boat ride on a friend’s converted ferry boat and a real Aussie backyard BBQ complete with homebrew, Matthew scored a few tickets to the taping of a popular Aussie tv show called “The Glass House.” Think “Who’s Line Is It Anyway” meets “The Daily Show”. Before the taping began, one of the hosts came out to the lobby to tv interview the audience for their opinion on who is the most beautiful person in the world. Jordan, when faced with this question, bright lights and a tv camera in his face, answered, “Matthew, of course…he’s right over there.” Matthew without missing a beat, said, “I’m honored, but believe it is actually …

Entry from: Sirince, Turkey Entry Title: “Rural Turkey” Entry: “We were greeted by the staff who were very friendly and laid back and shown to our room which was just charming. The place was so tranquil, peaceful and relaxing, that you felt yourself winding down as soon as you walked through the gate. The only noise was from the birds and the occasional braying donkey somewhere across the valley. There were bean bags to chill out on the lawn but beware of Minosh the kitten that hides under a bush and likes to pounce on wiggly toes. A little piece of heaven and we would have loved to have stayed longer. A 1km walk up a winding track brings you to the small hotel which has a pool you can use that is tucked away along a path and overlooking the valley below. Very welcome from the walk and the heat. The village was quaint with an area off the square like a small back alley full of small shops selling mostly locally made fruit wine and other touristy stuff. The peak altitude on the Annapurna Circuit trek is at 5416m which we expect will present some very good challenges… It’s a very well travelled route, and we will be finding food and shelter every night in tea houses etc. Not sure if able, but will try to send some updates from the trek (apparently there is a 5 star resort about 2 weeks in!) Here’s a Rough map of the area from yetizone.com _______________________________________ _____________________ Post trip report… The Annapurna Circuit was a spectular trek that exceeded our expectations. We loved the challenge of seeing how our body would respond to the challenge of sleeping and trekking at high altitude. Although a popular route (the most popular in Nepal), I didn’t feel that it was commercial or overcrowded (except at Thorong La, where there’s only 2 guesthouses). It’s the most popular for a reason: o Comfortable guesthouses spaced out so that you can go at your own pace – push hard or take your time. o A huge range of spectacular scenery – it felt like we were trekking through the seasons: spring …

Entry from: Shimla, India Entry Title: “Shimla – the capital of Himachal” Entry: “To kill time between the test matches in Chandigarh and Delhi, we decided to make our way to one last hill station before winter sets in – Shimla. Shimla is about 2000 metres above sea level and is the capital of the Himachal state. It is the largest hill station in India and was the Summer Capital of the Raj and it shows – the city just spreads out and over the tops of the mountains. But I am getting ahead of myself. The journey to Shimla itself is a feat. So we left Chandigarh in the morning for the interstate bus station to catch a bus to Kalka. Kalka has the railway station where the infamous “toy train” takes you to Shimla. The toy train is a smaller engine and locomotive with smaller cabin cars (only 5) that can maneuver through the small tunnels and corkscrew slowly up through the mountains. The journey from Kalka to Shimla by toy train takes about 5 hours. Keep in mind, since there is only 1 rail circulating through the mountains, trains from the other direction have to wait at small stations until the oncoming train passes. To avoid any accidents or collisions, the railway uses “Neal’s Token System”. At each station, the engineer will pick up a bag of brass disks that are used to gain access to the rail and …

Entry from: Seville, Spain Entry Title: “Matadors, Picadores and the brutal Bullfight” Entry: “Balmy, misty, overcast yet warm, the smells of Spanish perfume and musty wet trees after its been raining, revellers from another huge night at the feria strolling through town, Senoritas in full frilly Flamenco getup, horse and cart with bells and trinkets clopping through town. Just another morning in Seville during Feria time. I have to comment, the Spanish are extremely resilient and indeed go hard when it comes to nightlife, no doubt due to the fact that their night really begins at 11pm, they rarely drink to the point of degenerative innebriation, and they´ve instituted a 2 and half hour nana nap right in the crux of their afternoon. Siestas may well be the best things ever invented. Set off this morning to see the sights of Seville, taking in the impressive semicurcular, duel towered building at the Plaze of Spain, with giant water feature and Flamenco guitar being pumped around the place adding to the vibe considerably. Headed onwards to the very regal Neo-Moorish-Roman insipred Alcazar Castle, the ´weekender´ for the Spanish monarchs. With prominent cathedral tower positioned in the background, the Alcazar gardens were extensive and deluxe, and the brilliantly ornate tiled rooms and golden halls …

Entry from: Santa Elena, Venezuela Entry Title: “Trekking on Roraima” Entry: “Roraima is aa 2700 metre flat topped mountain (or tepui) straddling the border between Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana. Its abrupt rise out of the surrounding savannah, which is 1800m lower in altitude, means that it has a unusual ecosystem on the summit. The almost constant billowing cloud and heavy rainfall on the surface makes it a harsh environment where only the hardiest species can survive. When European explorers first came to the area, they pronounced Roraima and many of the other tepuis in the area inpregnable on account of the 500m tall cliffs that surround the summit on every side. The early explorers postulated that the high plateau might harbour ancient forms of life suspended in evolutionary development, which inspired Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘The Lost World’. In the late 1800´s the ornithologist Whitley spotted a sloping ledge which had broken away from the summit forming a ramp that would potentially enable an ascent on foot to the top. In 1884, this route was first used to gain access to the summit. Accounts of the strange rocky and waterlogged world on the top with its equally unusual flora and fauna inspired other scientific expeditions to the area.
